(Pooja Dubey, Intern Journalist) Nine people have died in Andhra Pradesh after allegedly drinking sanitizer instead of alcohol. This incident happened in the Prakasam district.
DSP Prakash Rao said, “Three beggars, three rickshaw drivers, and three porters have consumed sanitizer instead of alcohol. One died during treatment while the other died in his sleep. The matter is under investigation.’
SP of Prakasam district, Siddharth Kaushal who visited the Kurichedu divisional headquarters said that “The deceased had been consuming sanitizer with water and soft drinks for the past few days.”
The SP said, “We are also investigating whether they had mixed the sanitizer with any other toxins. His family members say that these people were consuming sanitizer for the last ten days. We are sending sanitizer stock being sold in the area for testing. The lockdown is currently underway in Kurichedu due to Coronavirus cases and liquor shops have also been closed for the last few days.”
Police said that “habitants are consuming sanitizers if alcohol is not found. Its first victims became two beggars on Thursday night. While one died on the spot, the other died in a government hospital. Late in the night, the third man was unconscious but was pronounced dead. Six others who fell ill after drinking the sanitizer died on Friday morning. Some other people, who fell ill after consuming sanitizer, are being treated at their homes in the village.”
