(Manisha Mahar, Intern Journalist); Due to its expansionist perspective, China, which is often under question, is now eyeing the small and poor Central Asian country Tajikistan. In the past few weeks, Chinese media has been repeatedly saying that the Pamir plateau coming into the territory of Tajikistan should be under the jurisdiction of China. Tajikistan is deeply concerned about this.
Chinese historian Cho Yao Lu wrote in an article quoting Chinese sources that the entire Pamir area used to be of China and now it should be returned to China. Tajikistan’s concern about this article published in the Chinese government media has increased, Russia has also got attention which considers Central Asian countries as its strategic area.
In 2010, a border agreement was reached between China and Tajikistan. In this, Tajikistan had to hand over an area of 1158 square kilometers to China in the Pamir area. China is also constructing an airport on Tashkurgan near the border of Tajikistan and Afghanistan, which is another concern.
Yao Lu wrote, ‘With the latest creation of the State of China (1911) the first task of the authorities was to recover their lost land. Some areas were returned to China, while some areas are still controlled by neighboring countries. One such ancient region is Pamir, which remained out of China for nearly 128 years under pressure from global powers.
