Saloni Subha ( Intern Journalist ) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday stressed on the significance of mother tongue as the medium of instructions until class 5 and said the new National Education Policy ( NEP ) that the Union Cabinet approved on July 29 and has a recommendation in this regard is free from any “bias or inclination”.
This is done for the first time after 28 years recommends primary Education in local languages. It will also increase public spending on education to nearly 6% of gross domestic products from 4%. Making board exams is also a part of a series of reforms to make the education system more contemporary.
“There is no debate that children when taught in school in the same language that is spoken at home, their pace of learning becomes faster. This is a major reason where possible, permission has been granted to teach students till class 5 in their mother tongue”, said Modi while addressing the reforms in higher education.
The medium of instructions has been a controversial issue and the government has tried to avoid controversies by emphasizing that no language would be imposed on any state or region. The central government has dropped a contentious clause in the draft NEP that mandated the compulsory teaching of Hindi in schools in June 2019.
