(Deepshikha Gautam, Intern Journalist) A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Supreme Court requesting the granting of sufficient ex-gratia monetary compensation to the families of all citizens of the coronavirus, Especially the economically weaker sections of the society. This PIL is likely to be heard in the coming days. The petition also requested to direct the Central and State Governments to prepare a suitable compensation plan to provide ex-gratia to the relatives of essential/health care workers who have died from Covid-19.
The petition claimed that most of the country’s population belongs to the economically weaker section of the society, in which only one person is an earning member and others in the family are completely dependent on the economy for their livelihood. The petition filed by advocate Deepak Prakash states, “It is evident that the death of an Indian citizen affects not only his personal life but also the lives of all the family members who depended on him as their only source of income. In such a situation, in the event of the death of the family member, there is no source of income for the living of those dependent on them.”
