(Anjali Shreya, Intern Journalist): Prime Minister Modi wrote a letter to Suresh Raina, who announced his retirement with MS Dhoni on 15 August. Raina shared this letter on Twitter. Modi praised Raina’s batting and fielding skills. He played an important role in the 2011 World Cup victory. Raina, thanking the Prime Minister, wrote – Players like me shed blood and sweat for the country on the field. When he gets appreciation from the people of the country and especially the Prime Minister, nothing can be more than this.

The Prime Minister wrote to Raina – On August 15, you announced your retirement. This is one of the most difficult decisions in life. However, you still have the same energy inside you. After playing a brilliant inning on the field, you are now ‘pad’ (wearing cricket gear before going to batting) for another inning of life. You have done a great journey from Muradnagar to Lucknow and then Team India.

PM Modi further wrote – You were not only a great batsman but also a useful bowler. Your tremendous fielding world is convincing. Your success will be remembered even in difficult formats like T20. The country will always remember your contribution to the victory of the 2011 world. The quarter-finals were played against Australia at Motera, Ahmedabad. I saw your best inning. I’m lucky to see that inning and your classic cover drive.

Prime Minister also remembered Raina’s contribution outside the ground. Said – Players are remembered not only for their work but also for their work outside the field. They will be an example for the youth. You also faced difficulties in your career. But, you faced them with courage. You brought up the name of the team and the country. You have supported the women empowerment and clean India campaign. Live a happy life with Priyanka (wife), Gracia, and Ryo (children’s names). Thank you for your contribution to the country.
