(Manisha Mahar, Intern Journalist); President Ram Nath Kovind has suspended Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Yogesh Tyagi of Delhi University (DU) with immediate effect. The Ministry of Education gave this information on Wednesday. Yogesh Tyagi has been accused of misuse of office and corruption. The President has ordered an inquiry into it.
Tyagi was made the VC of DU on 10 March 2016. His term ended on March 15 the following year. Following the President’s approval, the ministry will soon send a show-cause notice to the VC. Professor Tyagi was admitted to AIIMS on July 2, since then he was on medical leave. After this, on July 17, Prof. PC Joshi was put in charge.
Last week Prof. Tyagi removed Pro-VC Joshi and joined Geeta Bhatt, the director of the University’s Board of Non-Collegiate Education, without joining the office and submitting a medical certificate while on leave. Since then, the dispute between him and Joshi increased. Meanwhile, Joshi reported the appointment of the new registrar Vikas Gupta. On the same day, Tyagi approved the appointment of PC Jha as acting registrar. Due to administrative lapses and power battles, the Ministry of Education.
In a letter to the University Registrar, the Ministry of Education stated that VC was suspended until the investigation was completed, as he could influence the investigation while in office. Professor Joshi will serve as acting VC until the next VC is appointed. The orders issued by Tyagi during his stay on medical leave and without joining the office are not valid. It should not be acted upon by a university official.
