(Rishika Iyer, Intern Journalist):On the 4th of July, which is the Independence day of USA, rapper Kanye West took to twitter announcing his decision to run for the presidential elections this year. The 43 year old had mentioned his plans for presidency previously in the year 2015 during the MTV Video Music Awards. He is a staunch supporter of Trump who is often subjected to a lot of controversy due to his peculiar behaviour and contrasting political beliefs.
“We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future,”the rapper tweeted. “I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION.” He received support from SpaceX and Tesla CEO who tweeted, ” You have my full support!”.
Kanye West is an award-winning rapper and music producer born in Atlanta, Georgia. He is married to TV celebrity and businesswomen Kim Kardashian (stars in Keeping Up With The Kardashians) and has 4 children with her namely North West, Psalm West, Chicago West, and Saint West. The couple is known to be very generous and has donated money to various organizations on several occasions.
Despite being a vocal republican, he has had conflicting political views in the past. In 2005 he backlashed against the then-Republican President George Bush saying that Bush didn’t care for black people. Later, he changed his statement saying it came from a very victimized mentality.
West has received ample support from his fans who support his decision. However, he also received heavy criticism and lost a lot of fans for being a Trump supporter. He regularly tweets his admiration for Trump and also put on a red hat that read “Make America Great Again” while visiting the Oval office.
That being said he supported the recent Black Lives Matters movement and donated $2 Million US dollars to support the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. These were few black people who were brutally killed by the police following which Kanye stood up against police brutality and racial injustice. This is very divergent from Donald Trump’s beliefs. During an interview with Saturday Night Live (SNL) he said, “If someone inspires me and I connect with them, I don’t have to believe in all their policies.”
