( Namita Pradhan, Intern Journalist) Odisha; Rasogolla is originated from Odisha, and there’s no doubt about it. A lot of evidence and information are there to support the claims. It has historically religious importance which proves its origin from Odisha. It is a traditional food offered to Lord Jagannath.
On the last ritual of Rath Yatra which is known as ‘Niladri Bijey, the most popular festival of Odisha is also celebrated worldwide. It is offered to Goddess Lakshmi on the behalf of Lord Jagannath. It is very unfortunate of West Bengal, to claimed ‘Rasogolla’ as their origin along with its word ‘Rasogolla’.
The sweet Rasogolla is a soft, small-sized sweet. The shape can become bigger than a tiny ball and smaller than a hand bomb. However, Rasogolla’s place of origin is Puri, Odisha and it was known initially as Kshiramohan. Many Odia researchers termed Rasogolla as the Chenna a Kshiramohan- Chena and Kshira both are prepared from the milk. Even at the Famous Odia Dandi Valmiki Ramayana by Fakir Mohan Senapati, there are many descriptions of Rasogolla in it.
Chenna is referred to as a pure and favorite delicacy in Odisha, as it was offered to the deities and also in many varieties of sweet dishes like Rasogolla.
It prevailed in the history of Odisha since the ancient period as it exists in the much famous work of Utkala Sahitya. Hence it has proved its existence in Odisha with a religious history belongs to it.
With all the claims Odisha has finally received its GI (Geographical Importance) status on July 29th, 2019 after a long struggle and providing the historical value of the food.
The Odia people also celebrate the Rasogolla Dibasa on the day of Niladri Bijey as the value of the food is important in that day as it was offered to the Deities.
