(Aditya Shaw, Intern Journalist): On Sunday, @RBI, the Twitter handle of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the number of followers increased to 10 lakh. With this, it has become the world’s first central bank with the highest number of followers on Twitter. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das gave this information on Twitter. Das wrote, ‘One million (10 lakh) followers have come on the RBI Twitter account today, this is a new milestone. Congratulations to all my RBI colleagues. ‘
Bank of Mexico in second place
In terms of Twitter followers, Banco de Mexico (Bank of Mexico) is second after RBI with 7.74 lakh followers. The third place is Indonesia’s Bank Indonesia. It has 7.57 lakh followers on Twitter. The US Federal Reserve has 6.77 thousand followers and the European Central Bank (ECB) has 5.91 thousand followers. The Federal Reserve created a Twitter account in March 2009, while the ECB has been active on social media platforms since October 2009. The RBI created an account on the microblogging site in 2012.
RBI’s second Twitter account to spread awareness
Apart from the primary Twitter handle, RBI also has another Twitter account called ‘RBI Says’. Through this account, RBI works to spread awareness among consumers and bank account holders. The RBI’s primary Twitter handle had 9.66 lakh followers on 27 September 2020. Apart from this, Governor Shaktikanta Das has a separate Twitter handle, which has 1.35 lakh followers.
1.5 lakh followers increased during the lockdown
The RBI’s primary Twitter handle had 3.42 lakh followers in March 2019. Their number reached 7.50 lakh in March 2020. The number of followers on the RBI’s Twitter handle had doubled over a period of one year. According to an official, 1.5 lakh followers grew during the 7-week lockdown that began on March 25. In the current financial year (2020-21), 2.5 lakh new followers have joined the primary Twitter handle of RBI.
