(Namita Pradhan, Intern Journalist)Washington; Rep. John R. Lewis, the icon of civil rights who has always fight for racial justice started on the Jim Crow South and ended at the congress halls, has died on Friday night.
He was suffering from pancreatic cancer Stage IV since December. He died at the age of 80. He was the son of Alabama sharecroppers. He was served in Congress for the last three decades. He always fought for injustice, freedom, discrimination. He was also a part of the protest Black lives matter movement.
Before winning a seat in congress in 1986 he was a community activist and member of the Atlanta City Council. In 2011 he was the bestselling author and also was awarded as the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama. He was also elected to his 17th term in November 2018
