(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): Twitter Inc. said hackers have manipulated several of its employees to provide credentials for internal systems and targeted 130 Twitter accounts.
The hackers were able to restore passwords for 45 accounts while eight had their data leaked completely, including private messages, Twitter said Friday. Twitter later explained that, without specifying identifiers, data was not downloaded from any checking accounts. The hackers may even have sought to sell any of the accounts’ usernames, it added.
“There are some details that we are not providing right now to protect the security of the effort. We are continuing our forensic review of all of the accounts to confirm all actions that may have been taken”, the company said.
Wednesday’s attack involved a widespread scam, using the accounts of cryptocurrency firms, corporate leaders, and celebrities to request Bitcoin transfers in exchange for a promise to double the money. Twitter works with authorities including the Federal Investigation Bureau to identify hackers and to determine the extent to which user data has been compromised.
