SP Balasubramanian was admitted to MGM Hospital in Chennai on August 5 due to coronavirus infection. The boy, who was initially suffering from minor symptoms like cold and fever, fell seriously ill on August 13.
He has been on a ventilator in the ICU since that day. He was then treated with a ventilator and ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) support. The entire cine world was plunged into mourning with the news of Balu’s death.

He developed a passion for music from an early age. Singing songs has become a habit. His liking for the song led him towards movies. He went to Chennai in the 1960s and started hunting for opportunities.
Leading music director SP Kodandapani, who realized the talent of a boy who participated in a song competition program, gave him his first chance. Thus SP Balasubramanian was introduced to the industry as a playback singer with the film ‘Sreesreesree Maryada Ramanna’ released in 1966.
December 15, 1966, SP Balasubramaniam sang his first song in the recording studio. Until then, a new voice attracted the Telugu audience and music lovers who were accustomed to the tone of the bell. The tone soon became popular. Not just singing songs .. Balu is the one who changes the voice to suit the respective heroes.
Balu’s fame crossed continents with the release of ‘Shankarabharanam’ in 1980. He received his first national award with this film. He became a star singer not only in Telugu but also in Tamil.
In fact, he made a name for himself as an iconic singer in the South. He has sung innumerable songs in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam.
Also, songs were sung in Hindi. He has received six national awards in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and Kannada combined. Balu received the National Award for Best Playback Singer for the song ‘Tere Mere Beach Mein’ in the Hindi film ‘Ek Tujhe Keliye’. And the other awards are cocoons.
In total, he has sung over 40,000 songs in 16 languages and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most sung male singer in the world. Not only as a singer but also as a music director, actor, and dubbing artist, Balu has left an indelible mark on the southern film industry.
Balu has voiced famous actors like Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Salman Khan, and Anil Kapoor. Kamal Haasan, however, was not dubbed in Telugu except for Balu. He dubbed for nine characters in the movie ‘Dashavataram’.
Balasubramaniam has worked as a music director for about 40 films in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Kannada. He has also acted in over 70 films in all languages. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2011 in recognition of his contribution to the field of cinema and music.

Balu received the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award from the Government of Karnataka.
