If vigilance is taken, the situation can be controlled. Sri Lanka and the Maldives have cautiously controlled infectious diseases such as measles and rubella. The United Nations Health Agency said on Wednesday that Sri Lanka and the Maldives have eliminated measles and rubella in their countries before 2023. These two have become the first country to have measles and rubella free countries.
WHO South-East Asia Regional Director Poonam Khetarpal Singh said in a statement that when the world is battling the coronavirus, this success in dealing with the disease is encouraging and shows the importance of joint efforts.
A country is deemed to be free from measles and rubella when there is no evidence of infection spreading in the country for more than three years and countries have a satisfactory monitoring system.
The Maldives reported its last local case of measles in 2009 and rubella in October 2015, while Sri Lanka reported its last local case of measles in May 2016 and rubella in March 2017. The WHO has praised efforts to continue vaccinating children in countries battling the Coronavirus epidemic in the region. While Sri Lanka has succeeded in controlling the disease, India is still behind in controlling the disease. India is working on a plan to eradicate measles by 2020 and control rubella / congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) through the program, along with WHO’s 10 South-East Asia region member countries. The vaccination campaign is going on nationwide by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
