(Deepshikha Gautam, Intern Journalist) Kanpur: The metropolis was the hall of revolutionaries and freedom fighters. The freedom lovers were ready on every call of Mahatma Gandhi. Here the Flag Stayagrah movement influenced Mahatma Gandhi a lot. A provincial session of Congress was held in Kanpur in 1929. The youth league was founded by Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi before this provincial session. The session was held at Phoolbagh under the chairmanship of Sundarlal. Police brutalized in this session. The Congress flag was uprooted and thrown.
Flag Stayagrah started in the city. In this episode, Mahatma Gandhi came to the city and addressed a meeting of students at Christ Church College. In connection with the Salt Satyagraha 1930, Pyarelal Agarwal and Jiji Jog first broke the law by making salt. Both were arrested. In this beginning, new youth joined the movement in the metropolis. Many women also joined the movement. Mukund Charan Nigam, Desh Bahadur Baijal, Badrinath Kapoor, Goverdhan Das Khanna, Prakash Narayan Saxena Siddha Prasaad and Hamid Khaan were active in this movement. Merchant’s Day was celebrated on 30 August 1930. A huge procession was taken out in the city. The procession was led by Kamalapati Singhania.
