The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class has airbags for rear-seat passengers

(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): Safety was always at the forefront of what Mercedes-Benz does in its cars. Yet for the all-new S-Class, you know the company is going to go the extra mile to make sure the passengers are safe. The all-new S-Class will make its world debut on September 2, 2020, and will be the world’s first vehicle to be fitted with rear-seat passenger airbags to protect them in the event of a frontal effect.

Having an airbag needs a totally different concept to that of front airbags. The airbags, for instance, ought to be able to adjust to infant seats before deploying. The S-Class thus sets new safety standards for rear-seat occupants in tandem with a Belt Pack, an inflatable safety belt.

Mercedes-Benz designs its safety mechanisms from expertise obtained from its own work on incidents, which the firm has been undertaking for over 50 years. The extension of the PRE-SAFE Impulse Side feature of the latest S-Class is one step of the road to a truly integrated defense model, in which active and passive protection systems combine. The function uses radar sensors to identify an impending side-impact. It protects the occupants for the first time not only by using air cushions in the seats to move the driver or front-seat passenger to the center of the vehicle but also by simultaneously raising the entire vehicle using the e-Active body control suspension to divert the impact through more rigid structures.

We’re going to get more information about the innovation coming September 2 and we’re waiting to see the car too. The new-gen model is expected to arrive in India as well, but at the end of 2021, the company is likely to bring it to our shores.
