(Rishitha Jaladi, Intern Journalist) New Delhi: The prices of tomatoes in big cities accelerated to 60-70 per Kg. Ram Vilas Paswan, Minister of consumer affairs, said “The increase in the retail price of tomatoes is low productivity and high consumer value” The price of this love apple shot up in almost all the metro cities on Thursday except Chennai. Initially, The retail price of these tomatoes was Rs 20 per Kg, which were now 70 kg.
In Gurgaon, Gangtok, Siliguri, and Raipur the prices of tomatoes are RS 70 per KG while in Gorakhpur, Kota, and Dimapur it is 80 per Kg.
Paswan also added that the prices of tomatoes are usually high from July to September every year due to the lean period and will come back to normal once the supply improves. Surprisingly, even the high tomato producing states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, Tomatoes costs Rs 30-40 per Kg. According to the official data, India produces 19.73 million tonnes of tomato annually, while the consumption is about 11.51 million tonnes.
