(Rishika Iyer, Intern Journalist): The Trump administration has officially begun the process of extracting itself (United States of America) from the World Health Organisation. Trump informed both the Congress and the United Nations stating their withdrawal amidst the growing pandemic. The USA is the worst-hit country with 60,000 new cases of coronavirus in a 24 hour period. They have a total death toll of over 131,000 people.
A spokesperson announced that the United Nations is in process of “verifying whether all conditions are met for such a sudden withdrawal with the WHO”. This news affects everyone globally because the US is the largest donor to the World Health Organization and contributes to providing more than 14% of its total budget. This withdrawal will not only affect the treatment of coronavirus but will also cause a grueling time for polio treatment.
President Trump in the month of April accused the WHO of “mismanaging and covering up” the ongoing coronavirus crisis and demanded that the US receive full accountability of the disease from China. He then went on to stop funding WHO. This made the WHO chief agree to conduct an independent coronavirus response review in the month of May.
Many Americans, especially the democrats are completely against this sudden decision made by Trump. Joe Biden tweeted that “Americans are safer when America is engaged in strengthening global health. On my first day as President I will rejoin WHO and restore our leadership on the world stage.”
