(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): President Donald Trump, who avoided wearing a mask in public even though the coronavirus pandemic erupted, went to a military medical center outside Washington on Saturday to visit injured veterans and front-line health staff. The visit to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center marked Trump’s first public appearance with a face-covering since earlier this year the virus started sweeping across the United States.
Trump had previously declined to wear a mask in public or encouraged other Americans to do so, saying that it was a personal preference, although he had said that he would if he will be in a crowded place.
Trump, who faces a November re-election, has forced states to reopen closed economies. Yet the virus has gained a new toehold after several states eased coronavirus constraints. Fresh U.S. reports of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, rose on Friday to more than 69,000. The number of confirmed U.S. infections topped 3 million as of Friday.
