Aatmja Kumari(Intern Journalist): US President Donald Trump has made big claims about the price of medicines and the efficacy of treatment of Coronavirus infected but they do not stand anywhere on the basis of facts. Trump tweeted on Sunday, claiming that he would cut the price of drugs by at least 50 percent, which is unlikely. The steps announced by the President last month will also take time to implement and their impact is also uncertain. He is also less enthusiastic about the plan passed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi in the House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, Trump has once again emphasized that hydroxychloroquine is effective and safe in treating Covid-19. His claim has been denied by his own investigative coordinator, that people should adopt more effective measures like social distance and wearing masks. It is notable that Trump told his supporters in New Hampshire on Thursday, “We believe that the price of the drug is going to be reduced by 50, 60, or even 70 percent.” On Tuesday, Trump tweeted, “No other president will be able to do what I did.”
The reality is contrary to President Trump’s claim that there is no proposal to cut drug prices. At the same time last month, he had announced to import medicines from countries where prices are low, but it will take time and regulatory approval will have to be taken for this, while the presidential election is three months later.
