(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): The leader of the terror group Tehrik-e – Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Noor Wali Mehsud, has been designated by the UN as a global terrorist for being involved in the financing, planning, and perpetration of acts on behalf of and in support of entities associated with al-Qaida.
The 1267 ISIL and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council added Mehsud, 42, to the ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List on Thursday, subjecting the Pakistani national to an asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo. The Sanctions Committee reported that Mehsud was listed by, in collaboration with, on behalf of, or in support of organizations affiliated with al-Qaida to assist in the funding, organizing, encouraging, or perpetrating of actions or activities. On 29 July 2011, the UN blacklisted the TTP for its affiliation with al-Qaida.
The group assumed responsibility for an alleged bombing in Times Square on May 1, 2010, and it conducted a multi-pronged attack on the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar in April 2010, killing at least six Pakistanis and injuring 20 others, the Committee said.
The South and Central Asian Affairs Bureau of the US State Department (SCA) said in a tweet that it welcomed the UN’s addition of Mehsud to the sanctions list for ISIL and Al Qaida. Security Council blacklisting means that all states must suspend the funds and other financial assets or economic capital of declared persons and institutions without delay.
They are required to prevent the designated individuals from entering or transiting their territories and to prevent the direct or indirect supply, sale and transfer of arms and related material of any kind or training related to military activities to designated individuals and entities from their territories or nationals outside their territories or using their flagships or aircraft.
