Saloni Subha ( Intern Journalist ) An American commercial cargo Spacecraft bound for the International Space Station has been named after Kalpana Chawla, who was the first Indian woman to enter space, as a tribute to fallen NASA astronaut for her contribution to human Spaceflight.

This announcement was made by Northrop Grumman, an American global aerospace and defense technology company, that it’s next Cygnus capsules will be named after the “S.S. Kalpana Chawla” in memory of the mission specialist who died in 2003 with six crewmates abroad the space shuttle Columbia.

“Today we honor Kalpana Chawla, who made history at @NASA as the first female astronaut of Indian descent. Her contribution to human Spaceflight has had a lasting impact” the company tweeted this on Wednesday.

“Northrop Grumman is proud to make the NG-14 Cygnus Spacecraft after former astronaut Kalpana Chawla. It is the tradition of the company to name each Cygnus after an individual who has played a private role in human Spaceflight”, the company informed on the website.
