(Pooja Dubey, Intern Journalist)US Supreme Court Judge Ruth Beder Ginsburg died Friday in her Washington home. She was an advocate for women’s rights and was the second woman judge of the Supreme Court. Ginsburg died of metastatic pancreatic cancer.
Ginsberg died six weeks before the presidential election in the US. It remains to be seen whether President Donald Trump nominates anyone in his place, or whether the seat will remain vacant until the electoral battle with his Democrat candidate Joe Biden is over.
Chief Justice John Roberts mourns Ginsburg’s demise. He said in a statement, ‘Our nation has lost a jurist of historic stature. The top court has lost a colleague. Today we are mourning, but we are confident that generations to come will remember Ruth Beder Ginsberg as an advocate of justice, as we know her. ‘
Ginsburg announced in July that she was undergoing chemotherapy. She spent her last years as the undisputed leader of the liberal wing and became rock star-like among her fans. The young woman affectionately called her the Notirl RBG. She had shown resilience to protect the rights of women and minorities.
Her battle with cancer began in 1999. She protested Trump during a series of media interviews during the 2016 presidential campaign calling him fake. However, she soon apologized.
