It is a major religious place in India. It is a sacred city from the seven sacred cities of India. It has an important role in the development of Buddhism and Ravidassia culture.
It is also famous for its important industrial center muslin and silk fabrics, perfumes, ivory work, and sculpture. It is believed that Buddha found Buddhism in this place during his first sermon. Adi Shankara has established the worshipping lord shiva as an official sect of the city Varanasi. The city has always played an important role in Culture. It also has importance in the sector of religious education. Tulsidas wrote the epic poem on the life of Lord Rama in Varanasi which is called the Rama Charit Manas. Other religious figures were born in Varanasi which includes Kabir and Ravidas. It also has played an important role in the founding of Sikh, during the visit of Guru Nanak at Varanasi on the occasion of Maha Shivratri on 1507.
It also has a cultural revival under the Mughal emperor Akbar who was ruling the city and had built the temples of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.
