Aatmja Kumari(Intern Journalist): Mobile phone cloning has been in use for quite some time. Through this technology, the data and cellular identity of the phone being cloned is copied into a new phone. However, cloning of phones is privately illegal. Authorities legally resort to forensics to access the user’s phone data. In this process, transfer of International Mobile Station Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is also enabled.
Phone cloning requires only programming skills and within a few minutes the entire data of one phone reaches another device. Earlier it was necessary to take the phone in hand to copy the data, but now it is no longer necessary in the world of advanced smartphones. Now phone cloning can be done using just the app, that too without touching the phone.
After the cloning process is complete, the WhatsApp chat of the old phone can be accessed by going to the resent backup store in the cloud of the new phone or by going to iCloud’s Google Drive. It depends on which phone you have.
It is important to note that WhatsApp chat is encrypted in your phone and the conversation is also encrypted end-to-end. But this is not the case with WhatsApp Backup, it is not encrypted by a Facebook-owned company.
WhatsApp has clearly stated in its FAQ post that the backup of the phone is linked to the phone number and Google account. This means that anyone can easily access the chat from your backup. However, in phone cloning, chats can be transferred via recent backup. Let me tell you, Huawei had given such a process in its phone, where users could get WhatsApp data from the backup using the clone app already coming in the phone.
