(Aditya Shaw, Intern Journalist): At the time of Bangladesh’s freedom struggle, ‘Mukti Vahini’ was formed to protest against the tyranny of the Pakistani army. In 1969, discontent in East Pakistan increased against the then military ruler of Pakistan, General Ayub. It was at its peak in 1970 during the movement of Bangladesh’s founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.


In late March 1971, the Government of India decided to help Muktivahini. Muktwahini was actually the East Pakistan army that liberated Bangladesh from Pakistan. Muktwahini included soldiers and thousands of civilians from East Pakistan. On 31 March 1971, Indira Gandhi, while giving a speech in the Indian MP, spoke of helping the people of East Bengal. On 29 July 1971, the Indian MP was publicly announced to help the boys of East Bengal. The Indian Army started preparing on its behalf. This preparation also included training of Muktavahini’s fighters.

Indian Army told Pakistani General Niazi to surrender
Major General JFR Jacob went to Dhaka to talk to Pakistani General Niazi and ask him to surrender. Niazi tried to show airs at first but when Jacob said that there is a very good proposal surrender, otherwise we will not have any further responsibility.

Pakistani general’s tears
Jacob had told that he had asked Pakistani Nazarl Niyaji to hand over the sword. Niyaji then said that he did not have a sword. Jacob then asks him to give him a pistol. When Niazi was giving his pistol to Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Arora, he had tears in his eyes.

Only 13 days and Pakistan was disturbed
Lieutenant General P.S. Mehta says that on December 3, Pakistan attacked 11 airfields of India. After this war started and in just 13 days Indian jambajas drove Pakistan.


At that time, the Indian Army had lashed Pakistan, eliminating the fear of America and China. The Indian jawans fiercely helped Muktwahini and rescued the sixes of the Pakistani Army.

3,000 soldiers battered and Pakistan battered
Pakistani General Niazi had more than 26 thousand soldiers in Dhaka, while India had only 3 thousand soldiers 30 kilometers away from Dhaka. But due to the courage and courage of the Indian military commanders, Pakistan was completely defeated.

93 thousand soldiers of Pakistan surrender
On 17 December, 93 thousand soldiers of Pakistan were taken captive. About four thousand soldiers of India were martyred in this war.
