According to the health body of the United Nations, 8 million people die every year from smoking. Evidence suggests that people who smoke are more likely to become serious when they are infected with COVID-19 than non-smokers.

The WHO has taken this initiative in collaboration with the United Nations Interagency Task Force on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The initiative includes NGO partners such as Tech Industry, Pharmaceutical, and Path.
