Rishika Iyer (Intern Journalist): A 36 year old woman, who was a resident of Rajapur, a small town 40 kilometers away from Kolkata committed suicide by hanging herself to death. She also killed her 19 year old disabled son who was lying on the floor, said a neighbour who broke into the house when there was no response. This was after her husband died due to covid-19 in Howrah, West Bengal.
Her 45-year-old husband was suffering from fever for the past week. He was also suffering from serious breathlessness when he was rushed to the hospital. After a few hours of being admitted, he passed away.
His samples were taken to the covid testing centers after death and the results proved that he was infected by the virus. The civic body of the city performed the last rites of the man in the presence of the family. The mother and son were allowed to see the body for one last time from a distance.
After cremating the body, the mom-son duo locked themselves up in their homes. When the woman’s father (who lived in the same locality) sent a relative to give them some food, they got no response from the house.
After a few hours, the neighbors broke into the house to see both the mother and son dead. “They could not handle the gravity of the death and hence the woman committed suicide,” said a resident of their locality.
