(Milcah Anila, Intern Journalist) Newzealand: Jacinda Ardern has been sworn in as Newzealand’s Prime Minister for the second time. This is the first time a person of Indian descent has joined the Newzealand cabinet.

The Labor Party, led by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, won a landslide victory in the October 17 New Zealand elections. This was the first such victory in New Zealand since World War II. In the past, Jacinda formed a coalition government with various parties and now she is in power alone. Also, for the first time in the Newzealand Cabinet, a person of Indian descent was given the opportunity.

Priyanka Radhakrishnan made history as the first person of Indian descent to hold a place in the Newzealand cabinet

Priyanka has been appointed as Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, Ethnic Community and Assistant Minister of Social Development and Job Creation. Priyanka Radhakrishnan’s ancestors are from Kerala. Priyanka joined the Labor Party in 2006.

She was elected to Parliament in the 2017 elections. On this occasion, it is a privilege to speak in Malayalam, her mother tongue, in Parliament. The video is currently going viral. The video was shared on Twitter by Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

“India is proud that Priyanka, a Newzealand minister of Indian descent, is speaking in Malayalam in the country’s parliament,” he said. After speaking in Parliament, Priyanka said, “This is my first time speaking Malayalam, my mother tongue, in the Newzealand Parliament.” Although she had trouble speaking in Malayalam everyone appreciated her effort to speak in her mother tongue.

Priyanka’s father Radhakrishnan’s hometown is Ernakulam in Kerala. Priyanka completed her education in Singapore and went to Newzealand for higher studies. That’s where she settled into her job. Priyanka has previously worked on issues of domestic violence against women and migrant workers.
