The main objective of this day is to raise awareness about washing hands with soap to prevent diseases. Every year, 35 million young children worldwide die from diseases such as diarrhea and pneumonia. To prevent this, a day called “Washing hands with soap” was started.
The first Global Handwashing Day was celebrated in 2008. On that day, more than 120 million children worldwide washed their hands with soap in more than 70 countries. Cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh washed their hands with soap with thousands of children in India to mark the importance of Global Hand Washing Day in 2008.
Since 2008, community and national leaders have used the Global Handwashing Day to promote handwashing, to set up sinks and tipi taps, and to talk about the benefits of handwashing. Since then, the number of people celebrating Global Hand Washing Day has been on the rise. Global Handwashing Day is recognized by governments, schools, international organizations, civil society organizations, NGOs, private companies, individuals, and more.
The main objective of Global Handwashing Day 2020 is to “wash everyone’s hands.” Measures should be taken to ensure that everything you do works out and that you can celebrate Global Handwashing Day.
