(Anjali Shreya, Intern Journalist): Yoshihide Suga has been elected to the post of Prime Minister by the lower house of Japan’s Parliament. He was elected PM in Tokyo on Wednesday. In this way, Suga has emerged as the new leader of the country in the last 8 years. Former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe announced to quit the post of Prime Minister due to ill health.
71-year-old Suga Shinzo is believed to be Abe’s confidante and he is also called Abe’s right hand in Japanese politics.
PM Modi congratulated Yoshihide Suga on being elected the new PM of Japan. The PM has tweeted that he congratulates him heartily when the new Prime Minister is appointed. PM Modi said that he hoped that the two countries would take their special strategic relationship and global partnership to new heights.
Prior to the election, Suga has announced that he will continue many policies of the Shinzo Abe government. Shinzo’s economic policies in Japan are called ‘Abenomics’.
Yoshihide Suga is the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party. In the lower house of Parliament, 462 people voted to choose the leader of the post of PM. Of these, 314 votes were won by Suga. Earlier on Monday, Suga won in his party. In the race for the post of PM, he defeated two rivals of his party.
