(Manisha Mahar, Intern Journalist); Nalini Sriharan, who is lifetime imprisoned for the murder of former Prime Minister of the country, Rajiv Gandhi, on Monday allegedly threatened to kill herself along with one of her co-prisoners. According to the report, Nalini and another convict have been kept in the women’s special cell in Vellore. The convict complained to the jailer about this. Nalini, who has been in jail for more than two decades, allegedly threatened to end her life after being questioned in a cell by a jailer.
Besides Nalini, the others convicted in the case include her husband Murugan, Suthinath Raja alias Santhan, Aai Perarivalan, Robert Pius, Jayakumar, and Ravichandran. Four of the convicts – Sriharan, Noun, Robert Pius, and Jayakumar are citizens of Sri Lanka.
All the convicts were sentenced to death by the TADA court on 21 May 1991, convicted for their role in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. The death sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. Rajiv Gandhi was killed by an LTTE suicide bomber during an election rally at Sriperumbudur near Chennai.
Tamil Nadu government had informed the Madras High Court in February this year that the state recommended the governor to release all the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination. Government lawyer A Natarajan then said, “The state cabinet has only made a recommendation to the governor. In this case, only the Governor has to make a decision. The state government cannot be questioned by the governor for not acting on his recommendation. “
