(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): Swollen feet are very painful and sometimes a symptom of poor health. When the swelling continues, and you still experience some form of discomfort, it would be advisable to consult a doctor and have it tested. But there’s no harm in carrying out such simple steps before that:
* Use a comfy pillow to raise your feet. That can increase blood supply and decrease swelling. If you lie down, or just sit, place your feet on a pillow. Do so for a total of 20 minutes per day.
* If you’re used to standing for too long and working, then stop. Change the habit because it continues to put a lot of weight on your foot. Take breaks and sit down every 30 minutes. The same goes for those who spend long hours sitting at a single place.
* Drink a lot of water. When the body doesn’t get enough water, it will hold fluids it already has, causing swelling of the feet and other parts.
* Sometimes swelling is caused because of magnesium deficiency. Adding magnesium-rich foods to your diet can help. These include broccoli, cashew nuts, almonds, avocado, dark chocolates, tofu, spinach, to name a few.
