Saloni Subha (Intern Journalist ) At least 11 people died when a 70-tonne jetty crane collapsed during a load test in the Hindustan Shipyard Limited(HSL) in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam on Saturday, officials informed.
The victim was crushed to death when the huge iron structure fall on them after it’s cabin and base snapped during a trial run. However, the new crane was build two years ago But it was not yet contracted for regular operations due to change in contractors.
There were no casualties in the incident, said Visakhapatnam district collector. Out of the 11 deceased four were employees of HSL, including a supervisor, while others 7 were workers of three contracting agencies, he further informed.
Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy spoke to Vinay Chand and enquired about the incident. Reddy directed the Collector and Visakhapatnam city Commissioner of police RK Meena to take the required follow-up action. Bodies of the victims are sent for the post mortem.
While HCL has organized a committee, headed by its Director (Operations ), the Collector formed an independent committee of engineers, including HOD of civil, mechanical, electrical engineering of Andhra Pradesh College to investigate the reason behind the crane accident.
