(Anjali Shreya, Intern Journalist): The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has passed a strict order on the Public Interest Litigation of the Citizen Consumer Guidance Forum, Jabalpur. Under this, the Madhya Pradesh government and the State Pollution Control Board have been given guidelines to take sufficient seriousness regarding the disposal of masks and PPE kits during the Corona period. If negligence is revealed, the state government will have to pay a fine of Rs 1 crore per month.

The NGT has made it clear in its order that the Madhya Pradesh government and the State Pollution Control Board ensure strict adherence to the Bio-Medical Waste Rules-2016. It is the responsibility of the Madhya Pradesh State Pollution Control Board not to indulge in the act of charging the fine.

Dr. PG Nazpande, the head of the Citizens’ Consumer Guidance Forum, Jabalpur, told that in 2009, he had filed a PIL in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The same PIL was transferred to NGT. The NGT heard the arguments of advocate Prabhat Yadav and others on August 7. After completing the hearing the decision was secured, which is now made public.

It was argued on behalf of the PIL that instructions were issued to the Chief Secretary of the state in this matter. Despite this, 25 percent of hospitals across the state, including Jabalpur, is negligent. Medical waste is thrown wherever. This poses a risk of infection. The NGT took this point seriously and directed to improve the situation in the next two months. Failure to pay 1 crore per month.
