(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): On Friday, a 17-year-old Dalit girl was abducted and gang-raped in the Gorakhpur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The two men who raped her singed her body with cigarette butts, the girl’s mother said. Police arrested Arjun Nishad and his partner Mahesh Yadav aka Chotu on Sunday, who are now being sent to jail.
Shyam Deo Bind, Deputy Police Superintendent, Gola, said the police have filed an FIR on charges of kidnapping and rape against the duo under different sections of the IPC and also charged them under the POCSO Act.
A native of a village located in the Barhalganj area of the district, the mother of the victim said, the girl worked at a brick kiln run by Guddu Singh in Gola. The girl was staying with her family at a rented house in Barhajpar village.
“On Friday night my daughter went out of the house to fetch water from the hand pump. When she did not return, I searched but failed to locate her,” said the mother.
“On Saturday morning, the villagers found my daughter in a deserted house located behind a temple. She told that while she was collecting water at the hand pump Arjun Nishad and his associate, who came on a motorcycle, kidnapped her. They took her to a desolate spot and committed rape when she resisted, the duo burned her body with cigarettes,” the mother added.
The victim has now been moved to Gorakhpur district hospital for treatment and medical examination. The magistrate will record her statement, SP Bind said.
