(Deepshikha Gautam, Intern Journalist) Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has directed the state government to reappoint the suspended teacher in the textbook ‘You for next’ case. Last June, a case of writing the words ‘U’ to ‘next’ (ugly) in an English alphabet book came to light at a government primary school in East Bardhaman district in the month of June. The government had dismissed two teachers in this case. This is the case of Municipal Girls School in East Bardhaman.
When this incident came to light, the death of racist victim George Floyd in the US was being condemned on social media. The government said that on the recommendation of these teachers, the book was included in the syllabus. After this, students and parents protested vigorously demanding the book to be canceled. Parents said that this would have a negative impact on the mentality of the students. Realizing the importance of the case, Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, along with the hastily canceled the book, sacked another teacher Bernali Ghosh along with school headmaster Shrabani Mallick. The government said that it was he who recommended the book. The two teachers then approached the Calcutta High Court in a separate manner and challenged the decision of the Board of Primary Education.
Judge Arindam Mukherjee, while dismissing the Board of Education’s dismissal notice, directed Bernali Ghosh to be hired again.
At the hearing of the case, lawyer Gargi Goswami claimed that Bernali did not recommend teaching the book in any way.
They cannot be blamed for this. Justice said that the book has been written by Ruma Roy. It has been published by Vani Prakashan. The state government should have banned the book then. Bernali Ghosh cannot be blamed for the book’s recommendation in this case. Hence the notice of dismissal issued by the Board is being rejected. The High Court directed the teacher to be hired again.
