(Manisha Mahar, Intern Journalist): The wake of violent conflict between Indian and Chinese soldiers in eastern Ladakh, made the Indian government impose a ban on 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok. Chief executive officer (CEO) of the Chinese video-sharing app TikTok, Kevin Meyer, wrote a letter to the employees of India. A post was uploaded on the website by the company which states, “At TikTok, our efforts are guided by our commitment to democratizing the internet. To a large extent, we believe we have been successful in this effort… However, we stay resolved and committed to our mission, and are working with stakeholders to address their concerns. TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and places the highest importance on user privacy and integrity,” Kevin Mayer, TikTok chief executive and the chief operations officer of ByteDance, which owns the video-sharing app.”
Mayer said in a post titled “Message to our employees in India”, “Since 2018, we have worked hard to ensure that over 200 million users in India are able to express their joy and creativity and share the experience with a growing global community. Amid growing concerns about the job security of their employees in India, the CEO wrote in his post,” Our employees are our greatest strength. Their well-being is our top priority. We have also assured more than 2000 strong employees that we will do whatever is possible for us to restore positive experiences and opportunities.”
Video sharing app TikTok has been closed in the country on Tuesday with a permanent ban imposed by the Indian government. It has also been removed from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store in the country. The government on Monday banned 59 Chinese devices, including Tiktok, share it, UC browser, and club factory.
