(Rishika Iyer, Intern Journalist): Agrima Joshua, a Mumbai based stand-up comedian posted a stand-up clip back in April 2019 which suddenly became viral now as people are allegedly claiming that her video affected the sentiments of many people. In her video, she mentioned the upcoming Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue, and rumors about it on Quora.
A Vadodara based Youtuber named Shubham Mishra (he likes to call himself Badass Shubham) made a video which he posted on all his social media channels openly threatening her and spitting extreme graphic cuss words. The video approximately got over 2 lakh views. Angry social media users also shared the video and the cafe’s (Habitat Cafe – Khar West, Mumbai) employee details. A group of people from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena went to the cafe and vandalized/destroyed the property.
This caused an uproar in the stand-up comedy circle with comedians such as Kunal Kamra, Vir, Das, and many more demanding the arrest of this YouTuber. Kunal Kamra appealed to the National Women’s Commission for the same.
After countless online complaints, Shubham Mishra was detained by the Vadodara Police and has taken a suo moto action. The police also tweeted that they are in process to issue an FIR against this man under the IPC and IT act.
It also shows light on India’s rape culture and how other people like him namely Hindustani Bhau and Carry Minati openly slurr cuss words influencing thousands of young Indians.
