Akshi Kamboj (intern journalist) With the second wave of coronavirus being set in Japan, Tokyo reported an alarming rise in COVID-19 cases. Over 200 cases were reported in the city in four of the past seven days. Not only this but the majority number of cases are reported to be asymptomatic. Governor Yuriko Koike termed this situation “rather severe”. Hence, it raised its coronavirus alert to the highest “red” level, the highest of four levels in the metropolis system.

Tokyo had earlier reported over 8,000 of Japan’s 22,862 coronavirus cases. Analysts predicted that with the resurgence of the virus, pressure could be built upon policymakers to shore up the world’s no. 3 economy.
Steps taken to manage the outbreak:
- Warnings issued to citizens and businesses to avoid unnecessary travel.
- Increase in testing by utilizing equipments at universities.
- Local municipalities, opposition lawmakers and social media were asked to suspend the “go to” travel add campaign which promotes domestic travel
- residents dwelling in the cities were asked to stay away from relatives in rural areas that have reported fewer cases
- the timings of the campaign which provides discounts for shopping and food will also be reconsidered
- citizens were asked to avoid restaurants that lack proper hygiene control methods
