(Kajal Singh intern journalist): The Amphan storm has wreaked havoc in West Bengal and Odisha. At least 12 people were killed, thousands of houses were destroyed and water was flooded in the low-lying cyclonic storm Amphan which wreaked havoc in many parts of West Bengal including Kolkata. One has also died in Odisha.

Died in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal after a tree fell on a man and a woman. Apart from this, a 13-year-old girl died in a similar incident in Howrah. Three people died in Hooghly and North 24 Parganas districts due to the current. Officials said a woman and her seven-year-old son died in a tree fall in Regent’s Garden area of Kolkata.

Senior state officials said that it is not possible to estimate the damage to life and property due to this cyclonic storm, because it is still not possible to go to the areas which have caused the most devastation.

With heavy rains and winds of 190 kmph, Amphan reached Digha coast in West Bengal at 2.30 pm on Wednesday. After this, heavy rain and storm came in many parts of the state.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is monitoring the situation from the State Secretariat on Tuesday night. She said that the impact of Amphan is ‘even more severe than the coronavirus’.

In the north and south 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal, due to heavy rains and storms due to the cyclone, the upper parts of the tiled houses flew in strong winds, uprooted trees and electric poles and flooded the lower towns and villages.

In Kolkata, winds of 125 kmph overturned cars and uprooted trees and pillars, disrupting many important routes.


The power supply was stalled in Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas for a long time. Mobile and Internet services were also disrupted.

The embankment of the Sundarbans delta broke due to this cyclone. Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear roads obstructed by the felling of trees.
