(Pooja Pal; Intern Journalist): Parents of the children are not in favor of opening the school yet. More than two lakh parents across the country have signed a petition sent to the central government, saying that schools should not be opened until the situation in Covid-19 improves or its vaccine is prepared. The application, signed by around 2.13 lakh parents, has been sent to the central government when it has announced that schools, colleges, coaching centers, and other educational institutions of states and union territories will be opened in July depending upon the corona situation at that point of time.

The Union Home Ministry last Saturday released the ‘Unlock 1’ guideline instead of lockdown. It had nationwide concessions after Lockdown 4, ending on 31 May. In this, all sectors are being opened one by one after the countrywide lockdown from 25 March.

The application states, “The government’s worst decision will be to open schools in July. It would be like playing with fire at a time when we should extinguish it with full force. The current academic session should be continued in e-learning mode. If the schools claim that they are doing a good job through virtual learning, then why not continue it in the rest of the academic session as well.”

Significantly, several states of the North-East including Maharashtra, Kerala have indicated to start school activities from June itself. In such a situation, the HRD Ministry is also preparing to release the safety guidelines for school-colleges soon. The decision to open schools, colleges, educational institutions, coaching institutes, etc. will be taken after consultation with the state governments. State governments will now have more responsibility.
