(Anjali Shreya, Intern Journalist): The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to allow Muharram procession of Muharram. The court said that this demand cannot be met as it may put people’s health and their lives at risk. During the hearing, the court said that if permission is given to take the procession of Tazia on the occasion of Muharram and the infection spreads, then the community special will be held responsible for it.
The court asked the petitioner from Lucknow to move his petition to the Allahabad High Court. A petition seeking permission for the procession of Tazia over Muharram was filed by Shia leader Syed Kalbe Jawad. According to IANS, Kasif Nizami, the chief of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Dargah Sharif, has said that the procession of the Tazia procession in Delhi has been going on since the Mughal period. This time this procession will not be taken out on the occasion of Muharram for the first time in 700 years.
Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubrahmanyam were hearing the case. He said that due to the situation in the country due to Covid-19, this Tazia cannot be allowed to be removed, it may endanger the lives of people. The bench of judges, who are hearing the case through video conferencing, said, ‘You are demanding the procession of Tazia and if we allow it, the atmosphere will be disturbed. Special communities will be targeted to spread the Covid-19 infection. We do not want that. As a court, we cannot put people’s lives at risk. ‘ On the day of Muharram, the Muslim community remembers the martyrdom of Hussain and it is customary to take out processions with Tazia as mourning.
