(Rishika Iyer, Intern Journalist): The governor of Tokyo Yuriko Koike announced that the coronavirus pandemic situation is worsening and raised the alert to the highest “red” level on Wednesday. “We are in a situation where we should issue warnings to citizens and businesses, my understanding is that we’re in a rather severe situation now” said the governor.

The city witnessed record breaking numbers for two consecutive days with over 8200 cases and 325 deaths. While the total numbers in Japan have crossed 20,000 cases with the number of deceased reaching almost a thousand. Tokyo city reports an approximate of 200 cases per day and recorded its peak with 243 cases on Friday. 

Many officials debated the issue of red alert in the city. It was observed that most of the new cases were amongst the young people with mild to no symptoms. Tokyo has a population of 40 million people among which 40% of the new cases were affected people in their 20’s, along with a few cases amongst old people and kids below 10 years. 

The director of infectious diseases at the National Centre of Global Health and Medicine Dr. Norio Ohmagari said that people were contracting the virus in various public places. Some of these places are nightlife venues, nursing homes, restaurants, kindergarten.
