New Delhi: 36 teams of NDRF have been deployed to help during the super cyclone ‘Amfan’ in Orissa and West Bengal. This information was given by the officials during the review meeting of Union Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gaba. This round of review meetings will continue until the super cyclone ‘Amfan’ passes through both the states.
Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gaba chaired the third meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) to review the preparedness of states, central ministries and agencies to deal with cyclonic storm ‘Amfan’. Chief Secretary, Odisha, and Home Secretary, West Bengal participated in the meeting through video conference. Senior officials of the ministries of Home Ministry, Defence, Shipping, Power, Telecom, Health, IMD, NDMA, and NDRF also attended the meeting.
Make arrangements for food, drinking water and medicines
Reviewing the preparations of the states and central agencies, the cabinet secretary asked the state governments to ensure timely and complete evacuation of people from low-lying areas along the path of the cyclone. Also, maintain adequate supplies like food, drinking water, and medicines, etc. He also advised that teams be kept ready for road clearance and other restoration work.
During this review meeting, the Union Cabinet Secretary was informed on behalf of officials that 36 teams of NDRF are currently posted in both the states. Army and Navy rescue and relief teams along with Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard ships and aircraft have been placed on standby. Officers of agencies of the Department of Telecommunications and Ministry of Power have also been deployed in the states to ensure the maintenance of essential services.
During the review meeting, Chief Secretary Odisha and Additional Chief Secretary of West Bengal apprised NCMC of the initial measures taken by them. He told that people are being evacuated from low-lying areas. All action has been taken to supply food grains, drinking water, and other essential items. Teams have also been deployed for maintenance and restoration of power and telecom services.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that Super Cyclone Amfan is expected to affect the West Bengal coast by the afternoon or evening of May 20. Very strong winds are expected to move up to 185 mph with a speed of 155-165 km per hr, along with heavy rains and 4-5 meters of strong winds can occur in the coastal districts of the state.
The districts of East Medinipur, South and North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, and Kolkata are expected to be affected. The cyclone damage is expected to be higher than the potential cyclone “Bulbul” which hit the West Bengal coast on 9 November 2019. Went. The cyclone will also bring heavy rains, squally winds, and storms in the coastal districts of Odisha, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jaipur, and Balasore. The next review meeting will be held again under the chairmanship of the Union Cabinet Secretary.
